First Impressions

We made it safe and sound! We've been in Singapore a total of 4 hours and enjoyed every minute. Although exhausted from our 8 hour flight, we decided food was our first priority after checking into our hotel. The first thing I noticed as soon as we walked out our hotel door.... DURIANS!

As you'll see from the above photo there is a durian stall right across the road from our hotel. The first thing I noticed was the smell (sewer like). I do plan to try this fruit one day while I'm living in Singapore, but I think I can put it off for a bit longer.

We are staying just one night at this hotel situated in Geylang, the notorious red light district of Singapore. But if you have been to Amsterdam or Thailand you soon realise Singapore's version of a red light distict is very tame.

My husband stayed in this hotel when he came for his interview and had dinner every night at a street stall. He really wanted to go back to the same stall and have dumplings and chicken fried rice but when we walked up and down the street he couldn't recall which stall it was. Nevertheless we took a seat at one and just said yes to what ever the waitress suggested. We ended up with steamed chicken, broccoli in a garlic sauce and some rice. (pictured below) It was beautiful, but think it was a bit expensive for Singapore standards at $23.

Very full after our dinner, my husband still wanted his dumplings so we took a walk to see what we could find. We picked up a sim card for my phone along the way :) After seeing what some of the other food stalls had to offer, I definately realised we could have gotten a lot cheaper meal, but you live and learn! Stopping at a stall with loads of dumpling options we dove in and ordered our selves some spicy pork dumplings and a beer. The dumplings were amazing and I felt very relaxed and ready for bed!

So my first impression of Singapore so far is it is HOT and I love it! But there is still so much to explore and we have a lot of time.

I am incredibly sleepy and knowing the next few days are going to be the busiest for us, I think its time I said good night from Singapore!!

P.S. Thanks for all the comments on my blog, I am having trouble from this computer when trying to reply to them, but will try to get it sorted soon, I am not ignoring them!

  5. So are you just arriving in Singapore?

Well stay out of Giant at Plaza Singapura, because it smells like Durian BIG TIME. I have yet to go in when I didnt rush through the top floor to get somewhere else. BLeck. I know I have to try it...but do I have to try it?

Feel free to hit me up with questions about life over here. Good luck in finding just the right place.

  6. Can't wait to read your post when you actually try the durian ;-) I'm sure that will be a super popular post.

Glad I grew up here and actually love the scent. But I always find it really interesting how smells are tastes are culturally defined or least defined on childhood experiences. But I have cousins who loathe the smell of durian too...but it throw that theory of mine out.
